The BASIC Course is an internationally endorsed training programme offered by various critical care departments across South Africa. It is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals involved in the care of critically ill patients. This two-day course covers a comprehensive range of topics related to the management of critically ill adults and children. The programme includes a combination of didactic lectures and practical, hands-on skills stations, with a particular focus on mechanical ventilation, sepsis, and the care of paediatric patients.

Participants are required to thoroughly review a detailed course manual prior to attending. Course completion requirements include:

• A pre-course multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ)
• A post-course MCQ examination

Candidates who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion. All participants will also be awarded a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate. The BASIC Course is suitable for all doctors managing critically ill patients, from interns to consultants, and is also highly beneficial for senior nurses with intensive care experience.
